Hobe et Cie

Similar to many of the beginnings of costume jewelry companies in the US, Hobe - Jewels of Legendary Splendor - founds their roots in fine jewelry in Europe. William Hobe, who started the Hobe company here in America, was the son of Jacques Hobe, a French fine jeweler. While there seems to be some disagreement as to the exact year when William Hobe began, I think it is safe to say that they started no later than 1927. A family run business with the sons, grandsons and apparently even great-grandchildren involved, their pieces are well made and top quality and sometimes used semi-precious stones as well as Austrian crystal. The company sold under the Hobe name as well as other signatures (e.g. Madonna) and only in recent years has discontinued business.

Description: Hobe 5 Strand Glass Pearl/Brown Crystal/Rondelle Necklace with Fancy Rhinestone Clasp - I believe this type of necklace is made to be worn with the clasp on the side, as in the second picture, but of course if you prefer there is no reason it can't be worn in back. Smoky topaz rhinestone baguettes border the clasp, with round Colorado topaz rhinestone set in rows 5 stones wide. Brown crystal stations are separated from the pearls by tiny rhinestone rondelles (I count 50 rondelles). Rhinestone set shovel push in on clasp; decorative part is 1" square. Necklace is strung on fine chain rather than thread or other material, the sign of a top quality bead necklace. Shortest strand is about 16, longest about 20 1/2". Very good condition, pearls show wear but not obviously so. Components alone probably justify the price. Great 1960's look.

Description: Hobe Necklace Bracelet and Two Pairs of Earrings Set - Incredible set using floral-themed goldtone set with glass pearls and tiny crystals. Necklace has two larger florals centered with small fleurettes of pearls and crystal, edges of petals are also partially rhinestone set. Chain has smaller flowers alternating with a stylized elongated x link, and finishing with a flattened oval snake chain with hook and tail adjustable closure finished with filigree endcap and pearl. Hobe mark in oval cartouche on back of center indicates made after 1957. Necklace is about 1" wide at center front, and adjustable from about 14" to 18". Bracelet center is similar if not identical to necklace center, with side portions also using the small flower and stylized elongated x motif three rows wide. Foldover clasp, 7 1/2" x 1". Dangle earrings are clip, 2 1/4" x 1", with the same Middle Eastern looking embossing on the oval center that is found on the large flowers of the necklace and bracelet, with filigree capped pearls that match the end of the necklace extension. Button style floral earrings have the same clip mechanism as the other earrings, but match the floral heads of the necklace and bracelet, about 1" in diameter. Bracelet and earrings are unmarked but are obviously matches for the necklace, which explains why tremendous unmarked pieces are found that "look like they are X" but if the marked match is lost, it is rarely figured out what "X" is. (Later Hobe pieces use a roller-clip mechanism that is marked.) Excellent condition, with a little wear to one pearl on the bracelet, and plating wear on the back of the bracelet clasp. This has an equally wonderful matching cuff bracelet that I have seen, that sold on ebay recently for just a little less than what I have priced this entire set.

Description: Hobe Glass Pearl/Faux Carnelian Bead Bracelet - A wonderful "drippy" look that goes down your hand, this goldtone bracelet features three rows of spring wire covered with squared chain; the back uses filigree beads alternating with small brown seed beads, and the front is covered with foxtail chain that ends with small glass pearls, larger specialty pearls with more of the small brown beads used as pin holders and leafy goldtone endcaps, along with faux carnelian pear shaped beads with the same leafy endcaps. About half of the foxtail chain doesn't have the pearl ends, and I am not certain whether they ever did or whether that is just part of the design, as I see no signs of breakage. However, if you wanted to add them it could be done quite easily. Otherwise excellent to pristine condition. Beautiful piece. This has been in my personal collection for over 20 years.

Description: Hobe Jade Leaf Pin - A leaf and berry motif done in bright goldtone with dark green jade balls.  1 1/4" x 1 1/4".  Signed Hobe and has original Hobe hangtag that says "genuine jade" on reverse.  Don Hobe handed out sheets with all the different color names for jade at the Atlanta mini convention in 2002 and is extremely well versed regarding jade, so I feel quite certain that this is, indeed, genuine jade.
