Bogoff - Spear Novelty
Bogoff was a Chicago based (Spear Novelty) company that appears to have opened just after World War 2 and closed in the early 1960's. Known for its distinctive chains and elegant designs, it has proven to have a large fan base among collectors. Plating on the higher end pieces is almost always rhodium, and almost all of the rhinestone pieces contain at least one dentelle (fancy cut and more expensive round rhinestone). Earrings may be clip or screwback, and rhinestones are almost always paste-set. Similar in style to ORA and Albion jewelry, there is no known link between the three companies, except that all were Chicago, Illinois based.

Description: Bogoff Green and Clear Rhinestone Necklace and Earrings Set - Set in rhodium plating, this pretty link style choker and earrings feature a four petaled "flower" done in emerald green rounds with a single clear at the center, alternating with a link set with two more green rhinestones on the necklace. Earrings also have the flower motif surmounted by a single large dentelle in green and terminated on the other end with a set of three green rhinestones and a single clear on the very tip. Only the necklace is marked, on the back of the large dentelle that is typically at the end of the chain on these necklaces; earrings would have been marked on the clip finding, however someone appears to have converted these to pierced (though these are so well done that it is hard to tell if it wasn't actually done in the factory.) Description: Unsigned Bogoff Glass Pearl and Rhinestone Necklace - I rarely put anything unsigned in the signed category, but I am almost positive this is Bogoff; unfortunately, this type of necklace is usually marked on the end of the tail, and some previous owner decided to replace the clasp and tail with one from another necklace, probably to make it longer. It is now adjustable up to about 15 1/2", 1/2" wide. Creamy white pearls are accented on each link with a single clear rhinestone. Other than the chain part being a replacement I see nothing that is not original, and all is in excellent condition. Lots of small links make this conform to your neck beautifully. Description: Bogoff Clear Rhinestone Necklace with Triple Drops - This necklace is as wearable now as it was when it was produced 50-60 years ago. Typical fancy link chain for this company has each link set with a clear rhinestone. Central motif features pears, ovals and small rounds, with three large pears dangling. Description: Bogoff Clear Rhinestone "Princesse" Necklace - One of the most graceful and wearable designs this company produced, this features 6 large dentelles (fancy cut rounds) at the bottom of the center front that flank a single clear pear rhinestone suspended at the center. Flowing scallops are all pave set, and fancy link chain is set with a single rhinestone on each tiny link. Foldover rhinestone set clasp has the Bogoff signature on either side, and well as the signature on the back of the large pear (see photo). A little harder to measure because of the built in curve of the front, the appears to be about 16" long and about 3/4" at the center front. Description: Bogoff Heart Motif Clear Rhinestone Necklace and Bracelet Set - Heart jewelry is perenially popular; I am guessing these pieces are circa early 1950's. Each heart is about 3/8" in diameter; the necklace has 29 hearts and the bracelet 14, including a hidden heart clasp on the bracelet that is marked Bogoff and patent pending. Each heart has 6 clear rhinestones, making a total for the set 258 rhinestones. All rhinestones appear to be original, with slight age appropriate discoloration that is uniform. Description: Bogoff Hematite and Clear Rhinestone Necklace and Earrings Set - I do not know whether this is genuine or faux hematite but since this is a very inexpensive gemstone it seems quite likely that this is genuine. Round hematite cabochons are accented with small clear rhinestones. The necklace design goes all the way around the necklace with the exception of the adjustable tail portion, which is the usual Bogoff clear rhinestones alternating with open links, and a hematite cab at the end of the tail. The necklace is adjustable from about 12 1/2" to almost 16", about 3/8" wide. The clip earrings use three hematite cabs set in a triangle, separated by single clear rhinestones. Silvertone setting, earrings are about 3/4" in diameter. Unusual (for Bogoff) fancy radiant settings for the cabochons on both the earrings and necklace. Excellent condition. A very wearable set. Description: Bogoff Aqua and Clear Rhinestone Necklace - This design is apparently from 1953, and gives a kind of optical illusion by the way the octagonal stones are set in a kind of in and out design. Side chain is typical for Bogoff with alternating aqua and clear rounds in each link, finishing with an adjustable tail with slightly bigger stones that end in a single large aqua dentelle. Description: Bogoff Floral Necklace with Topaz & Clear Rhinestones - One of my favorite Bogoff designs, this uses topaz marquises and rounds and clear round rhinestones in a stylized floral design that alternates 3 larger and 4 smaller florals in the center front and continues the chain around in the usual Bogoff manner of using a more fancy than standard chain, this time a link chain with two clear rhinestones in each link. This culminates at the tail with the usual large dentelle with the Bogoff signature on the back, and a heavier than usual hook that was also standard for Bogoff. This is adjustable up to 16", slightly less than 1" across on the larger florals. This is done with a goldtone setting, which is much less common for this company. Excellent condition. Description: Bogoff Smoky Topaz & Clear Rhinestones Earrings - Set in goldtone, these nice quality earrings use brown baguettes in the center, surrounded by a clear pave border. Screwback findings are marked Bogoff on the back of the screw part of the mechanism, so again, probably earlier pieces. Description: Bogoff Turquoise and Clear Rhinestone Necklace and Earring Set - Necklace uses aqua marquises and surrounds half of each stone with a collarof clear rhinestones. Earrings use the same marquises in a grouping of three and surrounds them with a full circle of clear rhinestones. Earrings are screwback, marked on the screw finding. Necklace is unsigned but signature was probably on the final stone of the tail which is missing. Earrings are 13 1/16" in diameter, necklace is 3/8" wide and adjustable, from about 13" to 16", and uses a heavy rhinestone set hook that I have only seen on Bogoff pieces. Silvertone setting with rhodium plate. Some of the clears on the necklace have yellowed and you may wish to restone the clears if you want a completely "white" look. Description: Bogoff All Clear Rhinestone Clip Earrings - Bogoff always used nice quality stones, but the center squares here are exceptional - step cut and extremely sparkly. Framed by a border of pave set branches and topped with a smaller square, these are very classy and probably match an equally nice necklace. Squatty clip finding is marked Bogoff. Silvertone, 7/8" x 1/2". One small square is very slightly yellow, the rest of the stones are fine, and any other yellow seen in the picture is a reflection you won't find in person.
